MRI and MRA

Magnetic Resonance Imaging

An MRI uses a magnetic field and radio waves to create detailed images of various internal body structures such as the brain, spine, and other organs.

Magnetic Resonance Angiograph

An MRA is a test that takes images of the blood vessels and arteries throughout the body.

Both tests are extremely safe, as neither uses radiation. These tests are important tools for allowing doctors to examine different parts of the body for the presence of abnormalities.

3T MRI Technology

SRC is pleased to offer the area’s only 3T MRI technology. A Tesla (T) is the measurement that quantifies the strength of the magnetic field. Prior to the 3T machine, the standard was 1.5T. This means our 3T MRI features a magnetic strength that is twice the strength of other scanners and up to 10 times stronger than most open field scanners. Improved magnetic strength results in improved image quality and the ability to see very small structures with high definition clarity. It also allows scan sequences to be completed in less time.

Additionally, our 3T MRI features a 17% larger opening, making the scanning experience more comfortable for all our patients–especially those concerned about claustrophobia.

There is no additional cost for the higher quality 3T MRI scan. Insurance companies and self paying patients pay the same amount for an MRI, no matter the strength of the magnetic field, so it makes sense to take advantage of the most state-of-the-art technology available.

How to prepare:

No preparation is necessary. Due to the strength of the magnetic field and for your safety, it is important for us to know if you have any metal in your body. Let your doctor know and inform us prior to getting your scan if you are pregnant, have a pacemaker, have a history of welding, or have any metal or implants in your body.

Length of exam:

Because the 3T system has a more powerful magnetic field strength, the amount of time required to perform our patient scans is less than with other facilities. Even with SRC’s advanced MRI technology, an MRI scan typically takes 20 minutes of scan time for each body area being imaged.
